Tomorrow is the last official day of 4th year. On one hand i cant wait, this semester has felt like one long never ending day and it will be so good to draw just for the sake of drawing again. On the other, this last few weeks has been so much fun, there has been a great atmosphere, albeit a bit crazy at times but i have loved it. I DONT WANT TO LEAVE THE STUDIO. Degree show prep can start now! the show is up, but posters/signs need to be done and we can start making prints for the shop:) i should be cramming stuff into sketchbooks right now, i really just cant focus, its like ive developed adhd... doubt anything i do tonight will really affect my marking anyway. P.s it was a whole 2 years ago this blog was started...

We stayed in an old town, with the oldest, crumbling but most beautiful buildings i've ever seen. The majority of houses were completely decorated with hand painted tiles and had little hand door knockers.

After being back at work for a few weeks now, things get a bit mundaaane.... so today involved a trip to edinburgh to see the ECA degree show, do a bit of shopping and just wander around.

The illustration show was really good, although after seeing the exhibition space, i'm beginning to wonder how we will fit our year's work in the lower foyer gallery next year.....

My personal favourite was Kristyna Little, she had a great variety of work and was well resolved, the pic above is of her 'one minute zines'.

Also...got Mersaults new album which is beautiful, went to see Christopher Bettig's exhibition at Analogue books and picked up a copy of the 'Red Neck' zine by David Galletly while there.

Had a first look at the DOJ degree show today, and it was good. very good. It feels different going to see it this year, everyone's realising just how close our own is and starting to think about next semester (no pressure) aaaanyway.....

After a hopeless meeting with the supervisor and a lot of thinking, I have decided to change the dissertation topic I was working on. Its a bit shit really, as there is a 1000 word deadline next Friday and Ive only just decided. Its the whole deciding thing again.

I think I would like to look into the subject of childrens book illustration, but jeebus, i have no idea what im doing. Its a bit confusing as its such a huge topic to look into and although I have a few ideas, still have to narrow it down to find a suitable proposal question, so if anyone at all reads this blog or has any advice, i will love you forever. (But not in a creepy way.)

A couple of images for the chrismas brief, based on the 'what are you like' exhibition shown at the Dulwich Picture Gallery earlier this year. A sort of self portrait, 45 people in the public eye were asked to illustrate 8 of their favorite things, however they liked. For once, i have enjoyed a holiday brief! These are a couple of the 8 images im hoping to use, its a challenge trying to fit all 8 items in without the image becoming messy, so just have to try and put it together!

It is the end of semester review on Tuesday, so until then, its do-everythingthatshouldhavebeendonealready- times. Its also stress about dissertation proposal times, which is not going so well. I have been avoiding the proposal until now, i suppose the worry is that we pick something now...then halfway through realise the subject is awful or can't be taken any further. It feels a bit trivial though, considering the 4th years have the final hand-in next week, we only have a 250+ word proposal to write...

These are from our 'drawing week' brief at uni, which is a great chance to get back into just studies, no pressure for finished pieces this week.........
Anyway, heres a few from my visit to Broughty Ferry this week to draw boats. Well there was only one boat, and only one me, sitting like a loner on the beach but it was loovely. But then some lifeboat man went onto the boat and started it up when i was like halfway through the drawing and was like 'AAAAAAAAAAAAAA' but then he didnt move it, so it turned out fine.

Also, i think i might have fallen in love...

Today was the first day back at uni, and the first day of being a third year! At half past 11, we all stumbled into our studio for the first time in nearly four months (we are in the same one this year-different desks though!) still Boiling hot on sunny days, im guessing it will still be freezing cold in winter....and class mascot scan disk man in the corner. It feels really good to be back actually, after 3 months of monotinous work, im looking forward to having new projects thrown at us and to get back to some drawing.

So, new uni year = new blog (or thats the plan) and this is the first attempt.

Another month or two has past since last postage, its getting ridiculous but here goes....

I have really enjoyed the last month or so, work has been giving me less hours (less pennies-but i fucking hate that place...), and have been avoiding any form of uni project work (at all costs) but i have had the most amazing time with friends :-) a visit to the fringe-we heart dylan, camping parties without the camping, picnics, dancing, gigging, new boots, fat wednesday tea club, one too many banoffee pies, fuzzy tea brain, evil toutchcup, buddies times and more embarrasing photos for facebook stalkerfeed :-)

unfortunatly, it would seem the time to avoid has finished...................

My new instax arrived yesterday!! After the realisation that i could no longer get film for my polaroid without becoming extreeeeeeemely skint, i decided to add the instax mini to the camera collection, still havent had a proper chance to work out what does what, so some of these are a bit dodgy, but here are the first few shots;

Busy Times...

well well.... this last weekend has been amazing fun. it started on friday night with a gig in 'the town' in dundee with The Thieves, a band all the way from shefield/doncaster way. Another of the 'mac's gigs, usally a shambles, always a dodgy PA. but it seemed to go all right, although the one too many JD's before our set didnt help my concentration any....(thanks to the familiar faces who appered aswell!)

THEN saturday night, Sonnet did Cabaret Voltaire in Edinburgh! what a night.... along with The Trade from forfar and a+e from edinburgh, we danced the night away in cab vol. That venue is amazing, it has a great underground atmosphere and the sound in there is incredible, needless to say we were all a bit exited:-) check us soundchecking! Highlights....99p blossom hill in the Tron, the 'David Kerr! David Kerr!' chant, Giant Seagull attacks, SUNGLASSES, Bus Antics and the dancing! aye... work wasn't so good on sunday morning.....

MAY 15th is the last time any bean was posted on this blog.......!!! so here is a feeble attempt to fill this space. Well, sine then, the first issue of doj (2nd nearly 3rd year) illustrators was released, only to cause mayhem in the streets of dundee. Under the name of 88MPH, the zine caused quite a stir as people tried to get hold of this limited edition print.Pick yours up for free today- its oficially cheaper than asda price. (Also-thank you to gavin and david, the brains behind this 'zine) However, deadlines for the next issue are looming, and i have an idea brewing...involving a man and a grammaphone.

Also, it has come to my attention that Elton John is awesome. So is granola.

I do love a bit of origami, and while this is nothing like origami....it is paper folding! It started from just concertina folding strips of paper cut from old magazines, think they look quite nice together but-any suggestions what to do next? was thinking of hanging them....if enough get made!

On a completely other topic, the weather was sooo nice this past few days, on monday i had a notion bike somewhere. Anywhere. After packing some essentials: water, Opal fruits(YES opal fruits), sunnies, supply of music, i was off-for a few hours:-) this is one of the places i passed-not far from home, but surely the most randomly placed phonebox in angus...

So, finally getting around to posting some of this semesters work, while everyones out at carnival! just havent been out very much recently, just not been in the mood, hope that changes soon tho, there is just too much going on just now...

anyway, after a traumatic week of constantly black hands, an etching had been etched, this is a sketch of the image. unfortunatly, this etcher is now etched out.

Litho! went much better. the old lady hands disapeared, and the 'Incredible Illustrators Guide to Bizarre and Curious Creatures' (right?!) was created. Thank you to Mark for providing the laavely paper to make our swish books. This was my attempt at a page. Everyone elses was brilliant :-)

Ever found yourself with a deadline you know wont be met?
With our essay hand in looming, i find myself doing anything but researching or writing. I have become- it would seem, the Queen of Procrastination, cannot be a good thing....
Maybe i am just one of those people who cant work without being pressured, or is it down to being lazy? Even if it was, can you teach someone like that how to work?
Roll on 8th December.....

However, i am quite exited, because tomorrow i am offski to Glasgow to see people haven't seen in ages. Must amit it will be nice to get out of Dundee for a while, even if just for a day.

its not that bad really. finding it difficult to focus on our 2 deadlines at the moment. essay is one, sustainability is the other. just cant seem to get my head around either of these projects...! illustration friday is also proving quite tricksy this week, beginning to think my brain is giving up. but found out today, my friends got us tickets to see frigtened rabbit again at moshulu :-) so there is a silver lining and all that jazz.
